Aims To encourage the adoption of Healthy Eating behaviour To familiarise children with the constituents of a healthy diet by: Organising Healthy Eating promotions and publicity Working with Catering Services to offer attractive alternatives to chips, etc and one chip free day per week To promote consistent messages regarding food and health in the following major areas of school life: The taught Curriculum The food we sell The Pastoral Curriculum To challenge the junk food “eating on the hoof” culture by offering value for money meals and dining in a civilised social setting Healthy Schools Programme Tuxford School is fully committed to implementing the National Healthy Schools Programme. Initially we are participating in the Healthy Eating theme, which means we care about what our pupils eat and drink. We believe the food and drink our pupils consume is important for two reasons It can have a direct effect on how they function in the classroom. It can influence their health and well-being both now and in the future. We involve staff and students in promoting Healthy Eating and we are grateful to the PTA, Service Users’ Forum and Governors for their support and encouragement. Promotion of a healthy diet includes: Frequently updated publicity of the issues and of the events that are organised Publicly acknowledging the contributions of individuals and groups to the project Water Policy Research shows that the body and the brain function much better when fully hydrated so the school has a policy of promoting the consumption of drinking water. Pupils are encouraged to consume water throughout the day and are permitted to drink during lessons. Water containers in classrooms must contain water only – no other liquid is permitted. Water containers must be clear with a secure top to prevent spillage. Pupils can refill water containers at the water dispensers before school, at morning break and at lunchtime when dinner has stopped being served.
